2023 - Caddo Lake
Caddo Lake State Park is just over the Louisiana state line in Texas. I had seen some beautiful images of cypress trees taken in this area by other photographers and wanted to see the magic myself, and maybe capture it. Clear winter days meant I couldn't get the fall colours or mist I had seen in those photos, but the stillness and shade of late afternoon light allowed me to get the images you see here.
Jennifer and I took advantage of opportunities to do some canoeing and short hikes. I found photography from a canoe challenging, but the experience of gliding among the cypress trees was magical. On a hike, we passed a pavilion built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC), one of Franklin Roosevelt’s programs to provide meaningful employment during the Great Depression. Their work benefitted many national and state parks in the US. Compare that with Canada’s Relief Camps established by RB Bennett in 1932, where regimentation and oppressive working conditions ultimately let to the “On to Ottawa Trek” and the Regina Riot.
