2022 - Waterton NP
Jennifer and I were previously in Waterton National Park in August 2017. Possibly our favourite national park, it was swept by a wildfire two weeks after our visit. Almost half the park burned, including a number of park buildings. The town was saved. We didn't know what to expect on this visit. The vast areas of burnt forest was a sight to behold. Life is returning, but the forest will take a lifetime to mature. On the positive side, the panoramic views on hikes are amazing and incredibly photogenic.
The two colour photos here were taken at the same spot before and after the fire and you can actually make out individual trees that were burned. As pretty as this spot on the Akamina Parkway is, it's oddly the location of the first working oil well in Western Canada. I processed the "after" pic to match the "before" pic as best I could, considering different equipment, light conditions, and seasons (spring and summer).
