2021 - Newfoundland - Gros Morne South
A two-week stay in Newfoundland-Labrador was our first significant travel since the beginning of the Covid Pandemic, when a trip to Greece had to be cancelled. Besides a few days in St John's with family, our plan was to head across Newfoundland to Gros Morne National Park, then up the Great Northern Peninsula to L'Anse aux Meadows, and on our way back to St John's, do a side trip up to Cape Bonavista. The first of five galleries here are images taken in the Southern and Central regions of Gros Morne NP.
The "Tablelands" is one of only a few places where the earth's mantle is exposed to the atmosphere, turning the exposed serpentine rock to a rusty yellow colour. Because the rock is poisonous to most plants, these highlands are a rocky yellow barren.
Jennifer and I experienced an extreme heatwave while there, most unusual for Newfoundland. Climbing up from Green Garden was like hiking uphill in a furnace. Intended hikes up Gros Morne Mountain and to the Western Brook Pond overlook had to be abandoned due to the heat.
