Reno's Retreat
On Custer's orders, three companies under Major Reno attempted an attack on the Indian camps on the valley below, while Custer took five companies to circle around to the rear of the camps. Reno's attack was routed and the remnants of Reno's force retreated up the coulee pictured here.
Fallen 7th Cavalry Marks
The companies under Custer's immediate command came under withering crossfire and retreated to where they made their last stand, separated from the other companies under Reno and Benteen.
The Indian Memorial, a circle of stories and peaceful reflection when we were there, was constructed only a few years ago.
